The new C43 is modified by AMG, Germany's top automotive customizer and race "tuner," which has been partnered with Mercedes-Benz for decades. Only 1,500 of these ultra-performance cars will be imported to the U.S. over a three-year period. Priced at $52,750, the mid-size C43 features a modified version of the new-generation V8 engine from the full-size E430 luxury sedan. With higher-lift modular camshafts and a freer-flowing intake and exhaust system, horsepower is boosted to 302 (up 10 percent over the standard 275 hp figure) for superb overall performance, including 0-60 mph acceleration of 5.9 seconds. Mercedes-Benz All-Wheel-Drive E-Class Models to Wear "4MATIC" Badge Innovative Four-Wheel Traction-Control Outperforms the Competition Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc. (MBNA) will begin using its well-recognized "4MATIC" badge next month to identify its all-wheel-drive E-Class sedan and wagon models. The new 4MATIC is a simple, elegant all-wheel-drive system which uses "open" mechanical differentials at the front, center and rear of the vehicle. The innovative full-time system features advanced four-wheel electronic traction control to vary torque distribution to individual wheels under slippery conditions. Even if three wheels lose traction, the 4MATIC system can direct power to just one wheel - front or back, left or right - to keep the car moving. The mid-year addition of a 4MATIC badge is in response to customers who need clearly visible proof of four-wheel-drive capability, for access to roads which are restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles in winter weather. Owners of early-1998 all-wheel-drive E-Class cars can have a 4MATIC badge installed without charge at their local Mercedes-Benz dealer. All-New S-Class Makes World Debut Mercedes-Benz unveiled its all-new S-Class today Mercedes-Benz unveiled its all-new S-Class today during press activities preceding the opening of the Paris Auto Show. The world debut of the top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz sedan kicks off sales in Europe next month, while the new S-Class is slated to arrive in the U.S. this spring as a model-year 2000 car. At launch, the lineup for the U.S. market will consist of two V8-powered sedan models: the S430 and S500. The fresh styling of the new S-Class includes a coupe-like profile and a unique "face" reminiscent of the company's oval-headlight models. Although total length is three inches shorter, the cabin of the new S-Class is 1? inches longer than its predecessor. Making use of a variety of lightweight materials such as high-strength aluminum and magnesium, the new car is also nearly 500 pounds lighter than the previous S-Class, providing even better performance and fuel efficiency. Mercedes-Benz Blasts Past 100,000 Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc. (MBNA) and its 316 dealer partners across the United States continued 1998's record-breaking momentum with August sales of 12,983 vehicles, an increase of 74.8 percent over August 1997 (7,429). The month reached a historic high on August 13, 1998, when MBNA hit 100,000 in vehicle sales for the second time in its history, three months ahead of when it reached that milestone last year on November 20, 1997. Through the end of August, year-to-date sales reached 110,757, an increase of 67.5 percent over the 66,125 vehicles sold during the first eight months of 1997. The volume leader for the month was the E-Class model line with sales of 3,863 (vs. 2,786), an increase of 38.7 percent over last August; followed by significant gains in the C-Class with sales of 2,652 (vs. 1,821), an increase of 45.6 percent.
